Reader’s Question:

I drive frequently but I don’t have my own car here in Indiana. What can a non owner car insurance do for me?

Larry

Indianapolis IN

A non owner car insurance is ideal for people who drives frequently but uses someone else’s car such as yourself, Larry. Whether you borrow the car from a friend or rent it from a car rental company, getting this type of car insurance may be a good investment that you can give to yourself. Whether you drive frequently for a living or constantly go on short trips using your friends’ car, getting this car insurance will give peace of mind to you and to the owners of the car you are using. Basically, this car insurance will protect you for the medical bills you’ll have to pay if you incurred injuries during an accident while driving a vehicle. For many people, however, it is advisable to take all other options first before deciding on purchasing a non owner car insurance.

If you constantly drive using a company car as a living, you may want to consider buying a non owner car insurance for your own good. Although your company must have probably insured the company car with your name as driver in the insurance policy already, getting the car insurance non owner may serve as additional protection for you.

On the other hand, if you are a person who drives frequently for some reasons and borrows a car owned by your friends or relatives, you may want to get the car insurance for non-owners in order to give peace of mind to the car owners and to you as well.

Another situation will be if you are a person who often rents the car you drive. For some people, they find it much cheaper if they buy a car insurance for non-owners rather than buying a car rental liability insurance from the rental companies.

The downside of the car insurance for non-owners is that it is most often not readily available from most car insurance companies. You can either ask your car insurance agent specifically for it if he knows a good source, or you can conveniently search for this type of car insurance through the Internet.

Auto Insurance Cancellation Edison New Jersey NJ

Reader’s Question:

Is there a grace period after an insurance policy has been cancelled by the insurance carrier in Edison, New Jersey? I also want to ask if an insurance carrier have to send a letter through mail to let the policyholder know about the cancellation?

Terrence

Edison, NJ

The Consumer Guide for Auto Insurance published by the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI) states that there is not grace period for car insurance policies that have cancelled or lapsed. Insurers must provide notice of payment due dates according to what kind of payment is due under current regulations.

If your insurance provider terminates your policy for non-payment you should receive a fifteen day warning notice. You should receive a twenty day warning notice for all other reasons. While insurance laws require an insurance company to provide proof that a notification was mailed, they are not required to mail any notice “return receipt” or “certified”.

If your insurance is non-renewed or cancelled, you can file an appeal with the New Jersey DOBI. This department cannot guarantee your reinstatement so they would suggest to shop for alternative insurance during this process.

Car Insurance Coverage Boise Idaho ID

Reader’s Question:

I just bought a new vehicle, and I did not turn in my old vehicle. I have auto insurance on the old vehicle, am I insured on the new car? How much time do I have before I need to buy the insurance on the new car in Boise, Idaho? My insurance broker is out of the country and won’t be back for another ten days. I do not want to drive my new vehicle, unless I know it is insured.

Helen

Boise, ID

Coverage for an additional car varies from state to state and insurance carrier to insurance carrier. Your state may or may not provide a grace period for coverage. So, I cannot guarantee you are insured to operate your newly acquired car. The only way to know for sure is to contact your state’s Department of Financial Services (or Department of Insurance). I suggest that you contact your insurance provider in Boise, Idaho. They will not be able to provide a grace period that is less than your state requires. However, they may provide a grace period that exceeds what your state requires.

Reader’s Question:

I only have liability insurance on my vehicle. My son was driving it today and the engine caught on fire and the vehicle was totaled more or less. He has an SR22 insurance in Appleton, Wisconsin, and he told me that his SR22 insures him for any person’s car he may be driving at the time of an accident or loss. Is this true? Will his SR22 cover damages sustained to my vehicle because he was the driver?

Myleen

Appleton, WI

This type of insurance policy provides liability coverage only. It would’nt cover any physical damage to your car. Additionally, since he was driving your vehicle, your insurance policy would be primary and that too provides only liability coverage.

The SR22 policy that he has provides additional liability coverage for him while driving any non-owned car and also satisfies the state’s financial responsibility requirements.

You can get free auto insurance quote for your new car including physical damage coverage. Just put in your zip code and get free instant quote.

Non Owner Auto Insurance For Car Rental

Reader’s Question:

I always rent a car and I would like to know what kind of insurance do I need?

Bill

Cedar Rapids, IA

If you usually rent a car, a non-owners SR22 policy might be the best option for you than relying on the insurance sold at rental companies. However collision and comprehensive coverage are not usually available or included for non-owners policies. It looks like you still need to get this from the rental company. Your non-owners auto insurance will cover you when you rent a vehicle and got involved in an accident while driving that motor vehicle. It will give liability coverage protection. If you drive your friend’s vehicle and damaged it, the car owner’s insurance takes precedence over your non-owners coverage. Your policy however, would be activated when the car owner’s liability limits are exhausted.

SR22 Insurance Form

Reader’s Question:

I just want to know how I can remove SR22?

Markus

Thank you for asking Markus.

It depends upon the state’s procedure regarding removing your SR-22. Generally, if your time period mandated by the state to carry your SR-22 is over you should notify your insurance company so that it can be taken off of your policy.

Before you contact your insurance company to get the SR22 taken off you may want to contact the department of motor vehicles first to make sure, that it is okay to cancel your SR-22 insurance and you are no longer required to carry it. The Department of Motor Vehicle might need to send you documentation which you would need to show to your insurance company so that they would know that it is now okay to remove this financial responsibility certificate/form from your policy.

In most states the insurance provider will need to send the state a SR-26 when you terminate your SR-22 coverage. This is a form showing the cancellation of SR-22 insurance coverage.

Goodluck!

Reader’s Question:

I do not have my own car but they said that I must purchase sr22 car insurance coverage. What is an sr22?

Uma

Thank you for asking Uma.

Most of the time, an SR-22 is required of a drivers after being convicted of moving and traffic violations of the law and especially at the time the driver wants to get their license reinstated.

If the state isn’t requiring you to obtain an SR22, you don’t need to purchase an SR22. Whether you are going to driver or own a car normally does not matter if the state is mandating that you obtain a SR22 as a condition of your license being reinstated. The SR22 is showing that you will have financial responsibility if you do drive.

If you do not own a car and are required to get a SR-22 you should be able to get a non-owner SR-22 policy.

You may contact your states DMV to get more information if you are required to get an sr22 form or certificate.

Goodluck!

An SR-22 is a certificate that shows proof of financial responsibility. An individual is required to obtain an SR-22 if he/she gets caught driving without insurance. This is usually required for a specified amount of time and usually its three years.

This proof of financial certificate is also are associated with the following offenses in many states:

* At-fault accidents while driving without insurance
* Repeat traffic offenses or getting too many tickets in a short time period
* License suspension or revoked license

Requirements in getting an sr22 differ in one state may not apply in another state. Delaware, Oklahoma ,Kentucky, Minnesota, New Mexico and Pennsylvania are the states that do not require SR-22s. However, if you have an SR-22 and then move to one of these states, you must continue to meet the requirements of the SR-22 state where the offense was committed.
