Reader’s Question:
Is it true that auto insurance follows the car? What if I’m required to carry an sr22 certificate but I do own a vehicle? Is this coverage “non owners” insurance?
Miguel
Thank you for asking Miguel.
Not all insurance follows the car.
Liability coverage doesn’t always follow the car but rather the driver. It can get complicated to know which insurance policy should be used primary, secondary or even tertiary in these situations.
An SR22 is a form which must be filed by the insurance company stating that auto liability insurance is in effect for a particular driver. It is required an individual who got involve in an accident or was convicted of a moving violation and was unable to show financial responsibility. If you do not own a vehicle, you may purchase the non owners sr22.
To pay damages to others (property or bodily injury) you will need a liability insurance. Liability can be caused by a person while they are in a car or even if they borrowed a car from someone else.
Goodluck!
